* * * *
Dylan was panting and puffing for breath, and forced to stop just to catch it, long before he knew he should be stopping.
Living on the run with his dad for so long, well, he didn’t need a high school gym class to tell him that he shouldn’t have used up all his energy like that by just running as fast as he could. Once he was out of sight of the property, he should’ve at least slowed down a bit so he could keep going. Now he could barely walk.
The fact that he was sobbing like a total pussy wasn’t helping him to catch his breath either. Fuck, his sides hurt, too. He had a cramp from pushing himself so hard, but he swallowed down the pain and kept right on going. Every step hurt, but in a twisted way, he was glad for the pain. Focusing on that was so much easier than thinking about the look on Stephan’s face when the man told him to leave.
He really hoped that Roarke would take it easy on Marshall and Peter. He seemed like a decent guy and his pack was happy enough, so Dylan allowed himself to believe that they would be fine.
Maybe he should’ve taken the bite when he had the chance. Stephan would still hate him, but at least Dylan wouldn’t have to leave.
No, that was stupid. Dylan wiped his eyes on his already dirty sleeve and kept right on going. Stephan wouldn’t take him back just because Dylan was part of the pack. If anything, maybe that would’ve made his betrayal even worse.
He was so fucked, but at least he hadn’t gotten used to sleeping in a bed or eating hot meals. He could live off the land until he got far enough away from here. He could find a job that would pay him under the table, and he could get his life started.
That thought made him stop. He’d never traveled and worked by himself before. His dad had always been there. Dylan was supposed to rescue him, but now that option was gone, and it made him start crying all over again.
It’s okay, boy. It’s okay, just keep moving.
Dylan wondered why he kept on hearing his dad’s voice in his head. He was pretty sure the man had said those exact words to him when he was still just a little kid and he’d sprained his ankle. They’d been on the road together, far away from any town, and for the first time Dylan’s father couldn’t pick him up because, not only was he injured as well, the both of them having run away from the local pack that had chased them away, but Dylan’s father was also carrying their bags.
Dylan wasn’t so hurt that the walk was going to make it worse, but he’d still remembered crying and being angry with the world, but his Dad’s voice had been soothing and it had helped. For whatever reason that he was thinking about it now, he was glad, because it was helping him now.
